The accident occurred today, October 22, 2024, when a fuel tanker overturned and burst into flames in Kigogwa Town, along the Kampala-Bombo road in Kasangati, Wakiso District.
The incident, which happened around 3:00 PM, has left several people feared dead and many others seriously injured.
The overturned tanker ignited a massive fire, causing panic as thick black smoke filled the sky.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with flames spreading rapidly from the tanker. Local residents and motorists in the area were immediately thrown into a state of alarm.
In response to the emergency, a multi-agency team, led by the Uganda Police Force, quickly arrived at the scene.
Fire trucks were deployed to fight the flames, while four police patrol cars (999) and numerous ambulances rushed to assist in evacuating the injured. The Uganda Red Cross, along with other security forces, also joined in the rescue efforts.
Patrick Onyango, spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, assured the public that all available resources had been mobilized to tackle the situation. “Our priority right now is saving lives. Sadly, we fear there may be some fatalities, but we are doing everything possible to rescue those affected,” he said.
Several ambulances from the police and Uganda Red Cross were seen transporting the injured to nearby hospitals, while firefighters battled the intense blaze.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are urging both residents and motorists to avoid the area to give emergency teams the space they need to work safely.
